Day Three: The Secret Sauce

1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

How is Day Three going? I bet I can guess. No matter what you are doing, I would almost guarantee it’s not fun anymore. It’s probably been an inconvenience, a hassle, and maybe even a little uncomfortable. You may have even considered ending things. Stay strong. It’s from this point on where your journey really begins to become noticeably sweeter. (Notice I didn’t say better) In my personal fasting journey’s I’ve noticed the more of a sacrifice it is, the more I seem to get out of it. That doesn’t mean you need to try and intentionally hurt yourself. You’re simply realizing how dependent you may be on certain things. Breaking those addictions and spending the extra time with God really will make a difference.

There are THREE Secret Sauces which can help you get the most out of this time.

#1.  SECRET SAUCE- You need a plan.
If you go into a time of fasting saying, “I’m going to see how it goes” you will probably sale yourself short. I hope at this point you have a plan which you’ve thought out, discussed with those closest to you, and prayerfully considered.
You’re the most confident about fasting right after eating a really big meal. That’s why you need to think on it for a couple of days at least so you’re decision isn’t based on how you feel at the moment.  Have a plan.

#2. SECRET SAUCE- Have an accountability partner(s).
We’ll talk about this more later but you REALLY NEED to have an accountability partner to help you see this through. Someone to check in and make sure you are keeping your commitment or to tell you if it needs modification.
Last year, during the launch of Real Life Church, I made a commitment to fast without food for 21 days. My wonderful wife was my accountability partner. After about 7 days she felt I needed to modify my fast because the stress and pressure of that season was too much for someone not eating. She really helped me. I didn’t see how listless and lethargic I’d become. I modified my fast and was still able to complete the 21 days.  You need someone to take the journey with.

Also, don’t feel obligated to do too much if you’ve never fasted before. This isn’t a competition. No one wins an award for piety if you fast more than anyone else. This is about moving your life closer to God and interceding for your church and community. It might even be better to set the bar extra low so you’re sure to make it. Once you’re accustomed to fasting you can try something a little more lengthy.

#3. SECRET SAUCE- Don’t forget to pray and read God’s Word.
We’re also going to talk about these at length later on.
If you fast certain foods for 21 days but do not add prayer and God’s Word— you’re just on a diet.
If you fast media for 21 days but do not add prayer and God’s Word— you just bored.
Prayer in its most simple form is talking to God.
Reading God’s Word is Him speaking back to us.
Don’t skip it. Trust me.

Action Steps

  • Make a plan
  • If you have a plan micromanage it as much as possible. Plan meals, snacks, etc. Even plan an escape route if you have a weak moment
  • Commit to reading God’s Word at least three times a day
  • Commit to mixing in a small time of prayer
  • Don’t give up.

Sunday – Our Hearts

(2 Chronicles 16:9) For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the
earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

Make worship and prayer the priority of your life. Declare your complete
dependence on God. Ask for a renewed passion for His presence and
fresh revelation of His Word.

Monday – Our Purpose

(Colossians 1:28-29) We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching
everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in
Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so
powerfully works in me.

Our purpose is the Great Commission. Pray for people to be saved,
connected in a local church, discipled, and fulfilled in their ministry.

Tuesday – Our Nation, State, and City

(1 Timothy 2:1-2) I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers,
intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone–for kings and all
those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness.

Pray for America and the leaders of our country. Pray for Kentucky and
Bowling Green. Pray  for the Governor, the state legislature, courts, mayors and other city
officials, schools, police departments, and churches.

Wednesday – Our Points of Passion

(Matthew 9:37-38) The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.Ask the Lord of the harvest,
therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

Pray for our local missions efforts, national
church planting (ARC), and for our opportunities for international missions efforts.

Thursday – Our Family

(Acts 16:31) Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved–you and your household.

Pray for God’s blessing on your family (spouse, children, grandchildren,
grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.)

Friday – Our Needs

(Philippians 4:6-7) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Believe God for answered prayer to your specific needs (finances,
relationships, health, family members to be saved and other personal

Saturday – Our Church

(Ephesians 3:20-21) Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more
than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within
us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Pray for Real Life Church and the ministry that will take place in
2013. Pray for Pastor Brandon and his family, as well as small group leaders, and those on the Dream Team.

New Day

This was posted on the RLC website earlier today!

On January 13th Real Life Church will holding their worship experience in a new location and at a new time!

It’s a new day!

Real Life Church launched on February 5, 2012 in the Great Escapes 12 Movie Theater.  Since then, RLC has been featured by both local and national news outlets as a church to watch.  Not afraid to be innovative and different RLC has brought new ideas to the Bowling Green area such as Flashlight Easter Egg Hunts and Church At The Movies Series. Their “dare to be real” atmosphere has been a breath of fresh air and contagious culture.  This new opportunity is sure to be something which will benefit not only RLC attenders but the Bowling Green area as well.  Join us for the celebration January 13th as Real Life Church takes the next step toward being a driving force of Hope for our city and nation.

Now here is the rest of the story.
We have loved, loved, loved meeting at the movie theater for several reasons. My favorite is it forced us to look at the church as a group of people and not a building.  It’s so easy to see church as a building and not as the true BODY of Christ. Meeting in a portable location forced us to see things more clearly.
However, being portable has had its challenges. We’ve desired to have a place of our own from the beginning. Not so we could become inward focused but so we could offer more avenues to connect with people. Our new location provides us the ability to do that.
I felt as long as we were able to be fully effective at the theater we would remain there. However, the moment we could be more effective at a more permanent location the door would open. Now it has.
The RLC teams are so excited to get to work on something we truly feel is a divine blessing from God and we can call our own.

No. Real Life Church has been holding Sunday Morning Worship Experiences since February 5, 2012. Before that we had been holding launch team meetings since June, 2012.

A Letter to RLC>>> It’s A New Day

Hello RLC!!!

What an amazing weekend we had!
It was awesome! Hope everyone is having a great New Year’s week. Here are 4 quick things I wanted to share with you this week.

#1- Big shout out to Jamey O’Connor. Great job sharing the Word of God with us. Loved his points. Very quotable, memorable and applicable.

#2- Since being a Christian there have been times in my life when I’ve made sincere steps forward in my walk with God. It’s always come during times of fasting.
Let’s be clear. Fasting doesn’t change God. It changes us. It quiets our noisy lives so we can hear Him more clearly. If you haven’t already you should start thinking about taking part in the Fasting Challenge starting January 6th. There’s more info on the Real Life Church website.

The Christmas to-do is now over but you can’t really get back to life as usual because New Year’s is on the way. Well at least that’s the way it is where I’m from.

A Different Kind of Prayer

Found this prayer today. The author is unknown.


Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judgment and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love.
