Surviving Leviticus

So, your reading through a Bible plan and you’re actually doing it! Yeah!
Then here comes….. Leviticus. Noooo!

Let’s face it. That’s really the only time you would ever read that book anyway.
Here are a few ways to survive the book of Leviticus.

#1- If you’re reading Lev as part of a Bible reading program, read it first. That way you can read about examining sores, yellow hairs, and shaving your head then move on to something not quite so…. Unique.

#2- Listen to it. Use an app on your smartphone like YouVersion to listen to the selected chapters. That way you can try to get more of the overall idea of what’s being said rather than getting bogged down over certain points.

#3- Contextualize. During the time Lev was written, leprosy and other such skin disease was a big deal. Much like HIV and cancer now. There was no cue. Take that and add the fact there were approximately 3 million Jewish people living together in a desert and you’ve got the breeding ground for diseases.
Lev is actually a show of God’s great care for His people. He wanted to make sure they took care of themselves in order to keep disease from spreading and possibly laying waste to the whole nation.

#4- It’s not forever. Lev is no where near the longest book in the Bible. That trophy is held by Psalms (150 chapters).

#5- Lev is like the Brussel Sprouts of the Bible. You may not like but it’s actually good for you. Think about how much God loves His people. He went through all this trouble to lay out how to take care of these diseases.

#6- Lev makes you thankful for the other books of the Bible.

Okay, we’ve had some fun but the truth is that God’s word is all good. It’s all all holy. It’s all God-breathed and profitable for reproof, correction, encouragement, and good for training in righteousnesses. The best stories of love, war, peace, danger, family feuds, etc are all found in the Bible. The most amazing wisdom is there too. Wrap all that up into one book and Lev had its place too.

So, here we go. Leviticus chapter 1….

10 Things I Love About Launching In A Movie Theater

THIS SUNDAY (yeah!!!) is the premiere launch worship experience for Real Life Church!
I am so excited.

Here are some of the reasons why:

1. The church isn’t a building.

We’ve all heard many people say things like, “I just knew if I could make back to church, everything would be alright.” The more I read the Bible, the more this statement creates a problem. In the book of Acts, it wasn’t long before the Christians were threw out of the local ‘churches’. History teaches us they began meeting in caves and even catacombs for worship! (I’ve been in some churches like that.)  However, after Constantine legalized Christianity, things quickly began to change. Now for almost two thousand years, the word ‘church’ has been thought of as a building we go to for worship. That simply isn’t the case. The church is the body of Christ. We are the church.

When you begin to understand that we are the church, it doesn’t matter where we meet. God is there.  You no longer have to associate your relationship with God or His presence with a building. You can ‘have church’ wherever you are. Jesus said it this way, “If two or three are gathered together, I’ll be there too.”

2. It’s tricks people into being real.

There are so many masks which immediately come on simply because it’s church time. It’s just the way it is. However, meeting in a movie theater helps us remove those masks. They don’t associate us with their past experiences.

3. What kid doesn’t want to go to a movie theater to have church.

Both my kids are so excited to go to the ‘theater church’!

4. The smell of popcorn!

Who doesn’t love the smell of popcorn. Butter….. cheese….. butter……. awesome. Jesus moves through popcorn!

5. We get to work with a great theater company.

The Great Escapes Theater company has been amazing to work with. They have been patient, accommodating, and understanding of our various questions.

6. It’s already made for sound.

Movie Theater’s are in business to do one thing……. show movies.  They have spent millions to create screening rooms that have great acoustics and comfortable chairs. …..We get that! The sound quality in these rooms are amazing enough to make any audio guy screaming like a little girl.

7. Built in projection screen.

I’m a very media driven pastor so therefore RLC will be a media driven church. What better than to have one wall entirely covered with screen? Nothing. We have so many options we don’t know what to do. For launch we will have two projections on either side of the room and eventually add a third big one in the middle.

8. NO MOVING CHAIRS!

Being a pastor’s kid from the South, carrying metal folding chairs was just part of life. Chairs are also expensive, big, and hard to store. No big deal here.  The only worry with the theater seating is that the chairs may actually be too comfortable. Already think I’ve noticed a few college kids breaking them in with a baptismal nap.

9. The smell of popcorn.

I think this one has been listed twice. But, can you blame me? For $10 a bucket that stuff should taste like editable gold.

10. The Divine Will of God.

We looked at more high school fine arts centers and meeting room than I can remember. However, nothing really made sense until we stepped drove onto the parking lot of the Great Escapes 12 Theater. It just made sense.
I think it was God’s divine appointment. He has a way of moving you into position even if you don’t see His hand working in your life at the time. What you think are a series of strange coincidences is actually God moving you into the right position.

Real Life Church believes…

Real Life Church believes…

… God isn’t looking for the talented. He looks for the teachable.

…God isn’t interested in our gifts. He’s interested in our passion.

…God doesn’t forget His children. He knows right where you are.

…We were born for community. You need the family of God.

… Bad things happen, even in church. That’s why our faith is in God not in an organization.

… We don’t create a move of God. We find His move and jump on board.

…God isn’t waiting to move in the Earth. He’s already moving. Get in.

…The best is yet to come.

…You are not forgotten.

…You are worth something.

…You are important.

…You are special.

…It’s by divine appointment you are reading this now.

…Know this…. God is Real. God is near. God is waiting on you. He says you are beautiful, important, and worth dying for.

…Real Life Church exists to connect you to God. Right now. Then lead you toward becoming a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

Book Review: The Cause Within You

Couldn’t wait to share this book with everyone.
Truly one of a kind.
A friend and I were looking at some of it’s praises on Amazon the other day and couldn’t believe despite many awesome accolades, there actually were a few one star reviews.
One of them paraphrased read like this, “Barnett wasted my time with endless stories of changed lives. Who needs that?”
My answer to that would be, “I DO!”

Matthew Barnett is the founder of the original Dream Center. Becoming a pastor in LA at the age of 20, Barnett quickly realized conventional styles of ministry he learned seminary weren’t going to help him much in the real world of hurt and hopelessness.

After a life changing experience in Echo Park, he began to realize that ministry isn’t about success or building big facilities, it’s about people.

The end result 16 years later is a church called Angelus Temple with over 6,000 on attendance, the Dream Center who helps over 30,000 people a day and has inspired replicas all over the nation, and a man with a mission to connect people with their purpose.

Worth it.

Vimeo

If you’re like us, you have probably realized the power of video and other forms of media.

There’s things you can say through a video that you can’t connect with any other way.

Below is one of the videos we use for our Interest Meetings.  Instead of spending 10 minutes on the topic of “Why plant a church?” we can get it done in about 4 minutes.

Vimeo is a great way to connect these videos online. The look of Vimeo is great and brings a touch of creativity to your site or social media.

Check it out here: VIMEO

Why plant with Real Life Church from Real Life Church on Vimeo.

The question shouldn’t be “Why should we plant a church?”. The question SHOULD be “Why are we not planting more churches?”.
Join us as we change the course of a city, a state, a region, and beyond.
