Book 1 of 5o in my quest to read 50 books in 52 weeks. (2013)
This has to be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
While researching for the series “HOPE” I stumbled on this book actually by accident. It was long before I was glad i did. It is one of the most riveting stories I’ve ever read about Louis Zamperini who lived the first 30 years of his life giving Job a run for the most tragic story.
Before he turned 30, Louis was:
All before turning 30. However, one night all that changed. As so many did who attended a Billy Graham evangelistic campaign, he gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ. He began to recover from so many set backs and even eventually traveled to Japan, found the guards who had once tortured him, and forgave them personally.
Such an amazing story.
Below is a YouTube video and part one in a series of interviews Louis gave. I highly recommend this book if you want to read a story about a man who simply would not give up. It also illustrates the amazing love of God toward us all.
Louis can say just as Joseph did, “What you intended for evil, God made it good.” -Genesis
What an amazing weekend we had!
It was awesome! Hope everyone is having a great New Year’s week. Here are 4 quick things I wanted to share with you this week.
#1- Big shout out to Jamey O’Connor. Great job sharing the Word of God with us. Loved his points. Very quotable, memorable and applicable.
#2- Since being a Christian there have been times in my life when I’ve made sincere steps forward in my walk with God. It’s always come during times of fasting.
Let’s be clear. Fasting doesn’t change God. It changes us. It quiets our noisy lives so we can hear Him more clearly. If you haven’t already you should start thinking about taking part in the Fasting Challenge starting January 6th. There’s more info on the Real Life Church website.
#3- You are vital in helping us get the word out about the BIG NEWS! Tell everyone you know about RLC’s opportunity to take the next step toward the Vision God has given this great move of God.
#4- THE BIG NEWS. It’s a New Day for RLC! We will be relocating quickly. The first day at our new location is on January 13, 2013 is the big day!
Keep reading my blog and watching the website for updated info as it becomes available.
Greater things are on the way!!! It’s so awesome to be a part of Real Life Church!
Is it just me or does it seem like the week in between Christmas and New Year’s is sort of a ‘no man’s land’?
The Christmas to-do is now over but you can’t really get back to life as usual because New Year’s is on the way. Well at least that’s the way it is where I’m from.
So, from my house to yours… Merry In Between.
Hope your Christmas was as full of joy and excitment as the guy in the video below. If not, don’t worry. There’s still one more holiday coming up.
If you’ve been following my blog since it’s beginning in 2009 you have experienced a lot of changes.
Well here is one more.
We’ve been working on updating things for a little while now trying to recover from a crash which occurred a few months ago. We finally decided it was better to start over.
Here it is.
Here is a chance to start over and keep you updated with all things new.
If you liked some of the old categories and would like to see me keep them up, let us know.
Before having to restart my blog I had posted many, many titles and what I thought about them.
There probably will not be a repeat of all these in detail coming any time soon but here’s a few that everyone should read who’s serious about getting better.
1. Next Generation Leader (By: Andy Stanley)
3. Purple Cow (By: Seth Godin)
4. Pretty Much anything by John Maxwell
5. Ir-Reverend (By: Greg Surratt)
6. Making Vision Stick (By: Andy Stanley)
7. Attractional Church(By: Billy Hornsby)
8. Breath of Fresh Air (By: Chris Hodges)
9. Anything by John Bevere
10. Sun Stand Still (By: Steven Furtick)
Etc, Etc, Etc.
I could go on and on. One of the best things about books isn’t necessarily what’s written on the pages. Rather it’s what the books makes you realize about yourself. These books help you understand yourself better, what you’re good at, and how you can improve.
Non “Christian” books:
1. Unbroken (full of faith but not centered around Christianity) Story of Louis Zamperini
2. Stand Like Lincoln, Speak Like Churchill (Great book on public speaking) Not fun to read. Get the audiobook
3. The Hunger Games (Great release books for relaxing and enjoying a story)
4. The Lord of the Rings (Same as above except a much longer story)
5. Entreleadership (By Dave Ramsey)
Found this prayer today. The author is unknown.
Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judgment and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love.
Hello RLC! There are 5 things I would love to share with you today…
#1- This past weekend was so awesome. It was great seeing everyone of you. With the holiday season in full swing, finals weeks upon us, work parties, family gatherings, planes to catch, etc, etc, it was something special to see everyone honoring God and worshiping together. We celebrate the one person who also gav their life to Christ Sunday! That never gets old.
#2- Sunday’s message is already being called by some one of the most impactful messages of the year! We do apologize for the technical difficulties which also resulted in it not being as easy to hear for the online audience. However, don’t forget the main point of the week, Bring HOPE. Even more important than bringing your favorite dish, present, or whatever this holiday season, always remember to Bring HOPE to everyone around you. The ones you least expect really need it the most.
#3- December 23rd will be a special day for RLC. We always want to be creative and find fresh ways to do things together. Who ever heard of a church who has a picnic on Mother’s Day or has a FlashLight Easter Egg Hunt with glow-in-the-dark eggs?
Keeping with that same unpredictable theme we will NOT be having a regular service on December 23rd. We WILL be having a special Christmas brunch so we can share the holiday season with our families and having fun together. There will be food, fun, music, and I’ll be reading the Christmas story. You don’t want to miss this. Be looking for the RLC: CONNECT coming out this week with more info and also hear about it this Sunday.
#4- Fasting in January. You’ve already begun hearing me talk about this on Sunday mornings. Every year, RLC begins things right by doing a church-wide fast in the month of January. It’s a 21 day opportunity for you to draw closer to God. This year’s theme is “Because There Must Be More”. Info such as dates, and types of fasts can be found here. –> A Link to our site with more info is here.
The main question you are probably asking is, “Do I have to do this?” Answer: Of course not. This isn’t some type of ‘right of passage’ or something. It’s simply a time when we try to get closer to God through this spiritual discipline. You’ll be hearing more about it in the weeks to come.
#5- I found some fun videos for Christmas to leave you with today. Hope you enjoy them.
That’s it for this week. Hope you all have a safe and Merry Christmas. See you Sunday.
It was so awesome to see everyone yesterday! What an amazing day! I wanted to share 5 quick things with you:
1. BIG, HUGE SHOUT OUT to one of the amazing ladies of RLC, Kathy! She made the special treats for everyone in the lobby area and it was wonderful. So talented and giving. She showed some of the best of who we are at RLC! Way to go Kathy! You’re awesome!
2. Sunday’s message really changed my life in it’s preparation and I’ve been so blessed to hear that it made a difference in so many of you as well. When we truly see through the eyes of Jesus we experience so much love for those around us. Some have asked for a link to the prayer I read toward the end of the service. Here’s a link to it.
3. Thank you to everyone who served the city of Bowling Green over the weekend at the lighting of the square and the BG Christmas parade! We gave out over 750 cups of free hot chocolate. It was a wonderful experience and we had more fun than those receiving the cocoa. Thanks for the being the hands and feet of Jesus.
4. RLC has another opportunity to serve the city of Bowling Green this weekend. We’re partnering with the HOPE House to give provide presents to over 300 families this Christmas! They’re asking for all willing to help warp the presents this Friday night. I think this is awesome. Half the fun for a child receiving a Christmas gift is ripping off the paper! If you would like the opportunity to serve, email us for more details here.
5. This Sunday begins a fresh series entitled “HOPE”. Don’t miss this amazing two week series and experience HOPE in your life as well as practical tips on sharing HOPE with others.
That’s it for this week. Look forward to seeing you Sunday or at a Life Group this week.
What a great weekend! You guys are so awesome. This week I wanted to tell you about three things:
Number 1: Thanks for playing along with me and enjoying the clip of Tim Hawking. He’s simply hilarious. Number 2: This coming week RLC is going to be a part of the Lighting of the Square (Friday) and the Bowling Green Christmas parade festivities (Saturday). This is going to be an opportunity to show our love for BG! We would love you to be a part of it. For more info, email us here.
Number 3: There have been some great miracles and blessings RLC has recently enjoyed which I cannot wait to tell you about. More info is coming soon. Just know that great things are coming our way.
You are awesome. Have a great week!
