The main reason why Real Life Church is in existence is to challenge people to take a step.
I come from a background that always celebrated changed lives. However, the measuring stick we would use was sometimes a little unfair. We would praise God for people who gave up disabling habits, went headlong into their destiny, or gave sacrificially unto God financially. However, for someone who made small, gradual steps toward God there wasn’t much pomp and circumstance. Unfortunately most of them would blend into the background. For the most part it would go unnoticed that they had gone from a totally unchurched schedule to actually rearranging their priorities to be at church every week for the last two months.
While I’m not trying take anything away from the awesome change of others, what about the other people with less outwardly evident accomplishments?
I’ve always dreamed of a church where it’s all about the journey from the bondage of sin to the ultimate destiny of Christ in our lives. Each step along that journey is important and worth taking.
Ever watched the comedy classic “What about Bob?” starring Bill Murray. In the movie, Bob (Bill Murray) is encouraged to take baby steps toward his goal of overcoming fear. What if the church allowed people to do that? Have you ever noticed that the only people Jesus rebuked were the religious people? However, He welcomed sinners to draw close. It was so obvious that the church leaders criticized Him for it. He had to remind them that He like a good doctor Jesus didn’t come for the healthy but for the sick.
What if we realized church is more for those disconnected from God than for us long term, hopelessly saved Christians. Our greatest privilege is to serve those coming to Jesus and taking a step toward Him not crawling up to the church each week for our next blessing. God does bless our lives and we need it but what if that wasn’t our focus? What if it was the same as God’s which is His lost children?
An old Chinese proverb says, “The journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step.”
The big idea for today:
What step can you take today?
If you haven’t ever thought of church like this then your step may be to simply show up on Sunday with an attitude to serve. That’s an awesome step.
If you realize your relationship with God has grown cold, you about taking one step closer to Him today? Open your Bible today or maybe talk to Him a little on your way to work instead of listening to the radio? Its all about the next step.
