Holy Wednesday: A Day of Quiet and Betrayal (Easter Week)

Introduction

Wednesday of Holy Week is known by some as “Silent Wednesday,” because the Gospels say little about Jesus’ activities on this day. It seems Jesus stayed in Bethany, resting and preparing for what was to come. But while Jesus may have been quiet, darkness was moving in the background. It was on this day that Judas Iscariot made a deal to betray Jesus. While Jesus remained still, Satan stirred hearts—and the plan for the cross advanced behind the scenes.

Where Was Jesus & What Was He Doing?

Scripture doesn’t specifically record Jesus teaching or traveling on this day. Most scholars believe He spent it in Bethany with His disciples, possibly with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Meanwhile, the chief priests and Judas conspired in secret (Matthew 26:14–16). In the stillness, there was preparation—both by Jesus and by His enemies.

How Can We Worship the Lord Today?

Worship through silence and stillness. Take intentional time today to be quiet before the Lord. Jesus knew what was coming and used the silence not as escape, but as preparation. Let your quiet moments today be filled with listening, reflecting, and resting in His presence. This is also a day to consider loyalty:

Will we follow Jesus even when things grow dark?

Next Steps in Light of Holy Week

  • Practice Silence: Set a timer and sit quietly with God for 10–15 minutes. Let your mind be still and simply be with Him.
  • Read Isaiah 53: Reflect on the suffering Savior who willingly walked toward the cross.
  • Search Your Heart: Ask God to reveal any seeds of betrayal or apathy in your own life—anything pulling you away from full devotion to Him.
